Girls Soccer Finishes Strong

The women’s varsity soccer team went into the last portion of the season with a mission of finishing this year on a high note. They lost out to a few very good teams, but overall they finished the season strong.

Game: April 10 vs. Reidsville at home
Score: 0-2 (loss)
Highlights: Rockingham lost a fierce struggle with their neighborhood rivals Reidsville, giving up one goal per half.

Game: April 11 vs. Western Alamance at home
Score: 0-2 (loss)
Highlights: Western Alamance had only lost one conference game coming into this match. Rockingham had a good result against a first-rate team, holding Western to only two goals, although failing to score themselves. Coach O’Neal said, “We got good results against two very good teams. I’m proud of my girls’ performance.”

Game: April 16 vs. Burlington Williams, away
Score: 0-6 (loss)
Highlights
Williams was undefeated in 12 games, 9 and 0 in conference play, and the only game Williams didn’t win they tied. Williams is ranked 7 in the state. Rockingham fought well, but it was a losing battle almost from the start, Williams came out on fire in the first half scoring four goals. Williams capped off the night with two more goals in the second half.

Game: April 18 vs. Eastern Guilford, away
Score: 7-0 (win)
Highlights:
Eastern Guilford has been struggling this year, winning only one game so far. The Cougars came out and scored four goals in the first half, then put away Eastern with three more goals in the second half. This game was a confidence booster for the team, pushing them to five wins on the season. Sophomore Halie Terry said, “It was a good win for us, hopefully we can get more good results and finish the season well.”

Game: April 23 vs. Northern Guilford, away
Score: 1-8 (loss)
Highlights: Northern Guilford had only lost one game in league play so far. Northern came out strong, and at halftime the Cougars were down by five goals. The second half was better for the Cougars; they held Northern to three goals and scored one themselves.

Game: April 25 vs. Eastern Alamance at home
Score: 4-2 (win)
Highlights: This game was Rockingham’s senior night. Rockingham beat Eastern Alamance the last time they played by a score of three to zero. This game had a similar result. Rockingham scored one goal in the first half, holding Eastern to none. Then in the second half, Rockingham out scored Eastern by three goals to two, locking in a key senior night victory.

Game: April 30 vs. Morehead, away
Score: 1-2 (loss)
Highlights: Rockingham played well in this conference game, albeit falling short by just one goal. Morehead scored a goal in the first half and another in the second half, but Rockingham only managed to score one goal.

Game: May 2 vs. McMichael, away
Score: 3-1 (win)
Highlights: Rockingham went into their final regular season game hoping to finish the season strong. They succeeded, scoring two goals in the first half. Even though McMichael scored one goal in the first half, Rockingham scored one more in the second half. Rockingham did well enough in the season to make the state playoffs, and they will look to ride the momentum this win has given them into the playoffs.
